Sara Horan - Stained Glass

I grew up in a family full of artists and musicians, and the arts have always been a central part of my life. I was a deeply involved musician throughout college, and over the years I have explored a variety of creative mediums as a way to express myself, including quilting, weaving, woodburning, and painting. Each of these explorations ran its course, helping to shape my creative voice along the way.

When I began working with stained glass, it marked a turning point. Recognizing that I was ready to explore a new medium, my husband surprised me by setting me up with everything—and more—that I needed to begin. From the very start, stained glass felt different. I have never turned back, and this journey shows no sign of an ending.

For more than 25 years, I worked as a Special Educator, certified in Emotional and Behavior Disorders. Although I recently took early retirement, I continue to support my local school district by overseeing aspects of the special education system. The increased freedom in my daily routine has allowed me to focus more fully on sharing my stained glass work, and it is truly an honor to be a member of the Squam Lakes Artisans.

My work is driven by a love of experimentation and problem-solving. I am especially drawn to creating three-dimensional and multi-dimensional pieces, often incorporating reclaimed, antique, or unexpected materials. I have used Hudee rings—metal rims from antique porcelain sinks—as frames, repurposed old windows, and incorporated reclaimed hardwood flooring into sculptural pieces and bookends. I am continually searching for new and unusual materials to integrate into my work, allowing each piece to tell its own story.
